October 24th, 1973 — There were a number of oil spills in Vancouver during the 1970’s. This one happened just west of Stanley Park. Hundreds of men and women, including Colin Eckford in this picture, shoveled the oil from the beach into buckets which they carried and emptied into oil drums farther up the beach.
