March 28th, 1981 — Vancouver was in the midst of a garbage strike and as the garbage piled up around the city a call went out for citizens to clean the mess up themselves. Specifically there was to be a rally at city hall, where it was hoped hundreds of concerned Vancouverites would clear the mess that littered its steps. Only one man showed up, with shovel and broom, but after a verbal confrontation with union leaders the police asked him to leave and offered him a ride home. He left without anyone knowing his name, except me, because we went to high school together. When I asked if he wanted his name used he replied that under the circumstances maybe it wasn’t a good idea.
