Summer, 1967 – This photograph was taken while I was attending a summer course in photography at the Vancouver School of Art. It was late evening when I entered the skid road mission and sat down near the back with my camera sitting inconspicuously on my lap. I knew there was a picture here if I waited. About 15 minutes into the service one man walked to the front of the room to be saved. As he lowered his head I stood up, lifted the camera to my eye, focused and took one frame, then walked slowly out of the room. The mission was on Powell Street in Vancouver.
