January 24th, 1977 — Birks jewelry store was a landmark at Granville and Georgia for a generation so when they moved a few blocks north to make way for a new development their public relations department made it into a big deal with armed guards on the street protecting their valuable merchandise as it was moved into trucks. Most people were unimpressed and letters to the editor after this picture was published indicated many were outraged that guns were allowed on the streets of Vancouver for any reason.
