July 24th, 1974 — Wreck Beach next to the University of British Columbia has long been known as a nude swimming beach but in the summer of 1974 it also became home for students facing a housing crisis. Hundreds began living in tents on the beach as there was little accommodation available for them in Vancouver and rents were very high. This was my first scoop when I worked at The Province; a found picture that became a front page story for a couple of days and possibly caused UBC to try harder for a little while at finding living space for its growing population of students.
