January 14th, 1974 — A few days after Christmas the Cardinal family was evicted from their rental apartment above a store on East Broadway. The owner of the building, a recent Chinese immigrant from Chili, wanted to live in the apartment with his family. It was a time when rents were high and apartments difficult to find, especially for families. The Cardinal’s furniture was piled in the street, Mrs. Cardinal was crying and being consoled by her sister when an elderly Chinese woman walked by on her way home after shopping. The sister decided this woman, being Chinese, was the evil person who had evicted her sister and chased her down the street attempting to strangle her with a scarf. The Chinese woman escaped, turning into a store.
