Skwarczynski farmhouse

Skwarczynski Farmhouse Circa 1968 — Howard Fry’s exhibition of photographs called “Vanishing Landmarks” at the Saltspring Island Library is a record of the many historic BC farmscapes, barns and uninhabited farm structures that were rapidly disappearing from the landscape in the 1970’s. One of the photographs, “Osoyoos”, instantly stood out as I walked into the exhibition. I called it the Skwarczynski farm so named by me because the frame immediately following my negative of the house, which is above, is a headstone on the grave of Veronica and Theresa Skwarczynski. It was a building no photographer could pass without wanting to stop and photograph and I passed it many times in the late 1960’s while travelling through the Okanagan never sure if the small house to the right mimicking the larger building was an outhouse or the entrance to a root cellar. Maybe someone can tell me.
