July 5th, 1973 — The significant part of these pictures showing a young Jim Nelford missing a shot from a ditch on the 17th hole of the Quilchina golf course is the byline on the story, Arv Olson. Arv knew golf, he knew the players and he knew the courses. I arrived for the final round of the tournament expecting to get a boring lifting the trophy picture but Arv hustled me onto the course talking all the way to the 17th hole. “There’s a ditch … Nelford’s leading but he’s been hooking (or maybe slicing, it was a long time ago) all day … he’ll put it in the ditch and then try to hit it out … he always does … could lose the tournament.” And that’s what happened except for losing the tournament. I shot a lot of golf pictures over the years but this was my best, all because of Arv Olson. He was the cream of the crop. Arv Olson died October 30th in Fanny Bay on Vancouver Island, 80 years old.
